Poker is a card game where players attempt to form the best possible hand using any combination of cards. The game is played from a standard 52-card deck, with some variants utilizing multiple packs or adding cards called jokers.<\/p>\n
The rules are very simple: Each player is dealt a complete hand of five cards, and betting is allowed in one round. Betting continues until all players call or fold.<\/p>\n
Before the deal, one or more players may be required to make a contribution to the pot, called an ante. During each betting interval, the first player to make a bet is said to bet; a player who exactly meets the previous bet is called to call; and a player who bets more than the previous bettor is said to raise.<\/p>\n
In some variants, a player is permitted to check, which is to stay in without making a bet. A check is made by tapping the table with a fist, knuckles, an open hand or the index finger(s).<\/p>\n
Each hand has a rank from high to low, which is determined by odds (probability). The highest-ranking hand is Royal Flush, which consists of a king, queen, jack, 10, and nine of the same suit.<\/p>\n
Ties are broken by the highest unmatched cards, or by the highest pair. The highest unmatched pair breaks ties, even when there are several wild cards in play.<\/p>\n
One of the biggest mistakes inexperienced players make is to play too many weak hands and starting hands. This is a bad idea because it wastes chips that you would otherwise be better off folding. Advanced players know what to look for in their starting hands, and discard any hand that doesn\u2019t have the potential to improve significantly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
